My mother and father owned a small mom-and-pop office-furniture buy-and-sell business on Route 59 in Nanuet. I grew up in that business, and part of my responsibility was handling deliveries and scheduling the furniture that was sold. One day, a client came in to buy office furniture and asked my father if he knew a moving company that could relocate his office. My father said no. After the client left, I asked, “Why don’t we tell him we can do it? I’ll use your truck, get a few of my buddies, and we’ll do it on the weekend.”. Most commercial moves happened on weekends, and that was essentially how Slattery Moving began.
I was 17 when I started taking on those moves. I continued doing additional moving work on weekends, and by the time I was about 21, I had a DBA for Slattery Moving. I did not know exactly where the company would go, but moving was work I understood, work I could build on, and the best opportunity I had to create something of my own.
In 1991, the company began operating from a 5×7 office behind the Nanuet train station, with a small garage, one truck, and no employees. On days without a move, I sat in the office from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. waiting for calls, answering the phone, and giving quotes myself. As jobs came in, I hired one person to work alongside me, and when a job required a larger crew, I brought in a third person. For the first one to two years, the business grew in that direct, hands-on way: one client, one move, and one new opportunity at a time.
